JONATHAN O'BYRNE
Entrepreneur, Consultant CEO & Author
"Most problems exist because we don't step back far enough to see beyond our own perspective"
A Quick Intro
Born in Ireland, raised in the Middle East, educated in the United Kingdom, Jonathan then founded companies in Singapore and Australia before moving to Hong Kong in 2024.
He found his love for entrepreneurship early; freelancing at university and then founding his first company, a communication studio in Singapore at the age of twenty four. After learning the hard way how isolating international entrepreneurship can be, Jonathan went on to found one of Singapore's first coworking businesses at the age of twenty six. Expatriate life had taught Jonathan the fundamentals of community building and he used his learnings to create environments that supported diverse groups of people.
In a few short years Jonathan grew his coworking business 'Collective Works' into a multi-million dollar company. Through rapid growth and continual reinvestment, he achieved 1,300% business growth in the first 4 years of operations. In 2016, he joined forces with one of the largest real estate companies in Asia, and joint-ventured with Capitaland, at the age of thirty.
I’m often asked:
"How did you get started in all this?"
In 2019, after eight years of operations, Jonathan sold the Collective Works locations to the real estate company he partnered with three years earlier.
The sale was another first-of-its-kind for the industry. Jonathan retained ownership of the Collective Works brand and the intellectual property behind the business.
Jonathan published his first book Coworking Inc. in 2020 sharing his analysis and experience of the social movement that upended the norms of commercial realestate.
From 2021 to 2024 Jonathan held various APAC-focused leadership roles with the world's largest flexible workspace operator IWG.
In 2024, Jonathan will publish his second book The Coworking Effect discussing to far-reaching impact of coworking on the commercial realestate industry and what's next for our built environment.
Currently based in Hong Kong, Jonathan is soon to take the helm of one of Asia's leading coworking operators.

A Cross-Cultural Perspective
Jonathan has lived and worked in seven countries on three continents and has spent over 30 years in Asia and the Pacific.
As a European growing up in the Middle East, Jonathan learned what it meant to be a guest in a host country. He went to a school with students of 60 nationalities and grew up respecting and witnessing other customs and traditions. This long-term international experience expanded his empathy and trained him to be culturally open.
After a lifetime away from 'home', Jonathan describes feeling ‘foreign’ just about everywhere - but at the same time valuing the objectivity that being foreign gives him.
To this day, Jonathan loves to hear peoples' stories and learn about other cultures, traditions and perspectives.
I'm a global citizen.
It's made me a skilled observer.
A natural problem solver, Jonathan attributes his systemic thinking to his global upbringing.
His work often focuses on bridging gaps, improving communication and forming communities.
He started developing Coworking environments to tackle common issues faced by small expatriate businesses but over the years ended up developing a sophisticated market-entry solution that worked for organisations of any size.
By codifying community and helping businesses integrate into Singapore, Collective Works vastly (and measurably) reduced the incidence of expatriate secondment and branch office failure below the market average.
Jonathan has founded real-estate, technology, corporate services and management consulting businesses.
